The protocol

Hold the leash close to your body like a tree.
Let them lunge and go crazy — don’t let them reach the person. If the person tries to pet anyway, take one big step back.

Wait it out. The moment they stop or look at you → “yes” + food.
Rewire it: someone baby-talks → the reward comes from you, not them.

No greeting while they’re on their hind legs.
Wait until they’re locked in on you.

“Go say hi” → walk toward the person, leash loose.
Give them the chance to jump so they can learn. No jump = the stranger’s pets are the reward.

If they jump: “no” once + a giant step back with your whole body.
Not an arm-yank — quick, so the leash pops. Reset: check in with you → go say hi again.

Practise the hard cases.
Ask friends to baby-talk and keep petting, so the puppy becomes bulletproof.
